1st XI Saturday 20th April Read vs Salesbury - Loss
Read got the season underway on a glorious afternoon, winning the toss and electing to bat first on hard dry track that as always is a credit to the ground staff.
The loss of Will Wrathall and Matthew Walker with just 10 on the board led to a cautious approach as Joel Duerden and the Pro, Luke Jongwe started to build an innings against a tight Salesbury attack. They took the score to 71 before the pro somehow managed to squeeze the ball onto his stumps, departing for 33. Tom Turner joined Joel and doubled the score before Joel was caught and bowled by Josh Bristol for 43, 145-3.
Tom soon followed, caught behind at 149-5 after a brisk 51 off 46 balls, including eight fours and a six. Jack Wood and Luke Powell both scored seven apiece and a couple of lively knocks from Warren Eastham (16) and Josh Lavin (26 not out) meant that Read finished on 211-8, which was probably a few short of what was expected
Salesbury lost an early wicket of Holgate for 0, the first wicket for Luke Powell who went on to impress on his bowling debut. Scoring at a brisk rate, they lost their second wicket at 65, again to Luke. Two more wickets in successive balls with the score on 75, including Salesbury pro, Ramanayake, took Luke's haul to 4 and had Salesbury in a spot of trouble. Rawlinson joined Parkinson at the crease and proceeded to out score his partner at a runs a ball 61 before being bowled by Jamie Woodall with the score on 163-5.
Parkinson fell soon after, bowled by Warren Eastham for a patient 48 and at 169-6 the game was definitely in the balance. A stubborn knock of 25 from Salesbury captain Stephen Brown (25 no) supported by Josh Bristol who scored 7 before giving Luke his maiden five wicket haul at 200-7 saw the visitors over the line with six overs to spare.
A disappointing day with a few things not going to plan, falling short of setting a challenging target followed by some loose bowling, it made for an entertaining game but all credit to Salesbury for a battling win.
